Vibo Valentia is the ancient Greek colony called Hipponion founded by Locri Epizephiri. The sightseeing starts with our tour guides from the Norman-Swabian Castle, a medieval fortress with powerful cylindrical towers: it was built in several steps by Roger the Norman, Frederick II and Charles II and it is placed in a good position over either the old and the modern part of the town where you can see a wonderful panorama with the sea. Inside the Castle there is the State Archeological Museum “Vito Capialbi” in which there are tools of the Bronze Age and the Roman period which have been found in the surrounding. From here you go down to the old town from the medieval district Borgonovo passing through narrow alleys and ancient palaces. Then you reach the Cathedral dedicated to St. Leoluca of the Baroque period, whose bronze doors tell the story of the town. Close to the Cathedral, there is the Museum of Sacred Art in the Valentianum, a former Dominican convent.
