Day by day

A trip in Calabria for visiting the places where were founded the ancient Greek colonies and the Roman cities, which now represent the most important Archaeological Parks: a way to know more about the glorious past of this land. The program includes also the sightseeing of interesting villages close to the Parks.

DAY 1 - Arrive in Calabria

The trip for reaching Calabria: dinner and overnight at 4* hotel in Sibari/Rossano area.

DAY 2 - Sightseeing of the Archaeological Park in Sibari and the historical centre of Rossano.

Breakfast. Sightseeing of the Archaeological Park of the ancient Sybarys, one of the biggest and most important city of the Magna Grecia, whose remains are hosted in the National Archaeological Museum of Sibari. The city of Sybarys was founded by the Greeks and was an important commercial centre which became first Thourioi by the surviving Sybarities and then a Roman colony called Copia. In the afternoon a guided walk in Rossano, with its Byzantine historical centre and the Diocesan Museum, where is the famous Codex Purpureus, a greek Gospels of the sixth century. Possibility to visiting the Amarelli family’s Museum of Liquorice. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

DAY 3 - Guided visit of Crotone and the Archaeological Park of Capo Colonna

Breakfast. Sightseeing of Crotone, the Pitagora's city (an Italian famous mathematical and philosopher of the VI century B.C., and of the Magna Grecia. Guided walk in to the historical centre and the National Archaeological Museum which hosts many treasures and remains from the Hera Lacina Temple. In the afternoon the visit of the Archaeological Park of Capo Colonna, settled on the cape on the Ionian Sea which has got the same name. Here the Hera Lacinia Temple rose up, whose dedicated to Zeus's wife and sister, protector of the pastures, the women and her fertility, the family and the wedding. Just a Doric column has survived. Transfer to 4* hotel in Crotone/ Le Castella, dinner and overnight.

DAY 4 - Sightseeing of Le Castella an the Archaeological Park of Scolacium

Breakfast. Departure to Le Castella, an hamlet of Isola Capo Rizzuto by the sea, and guided visit of the Castle, a fortress of the XV century sited on a little isle linked to the coast by a strip of land and surrounded by the wonderful Ionian sea, one of the most beautiful place of the Capo Rizzuto Marine Reserve. In the afternoon guided visit of the Archaeological Park of Scolacium. This wonderful and well kept area is surrounded by an olive grove and tells the story of Skylletion, an ancient city of Magna Grecia, which became the prosperous Roman colony Scolacium. Almost nothing remain from the ancient Greek colony Skylletion, there is more of the Roman period such as a necropolis, an aqueduct, three thermal establishments and the amphitheatre of the II century A.D. Very interesting the ruins of the Santa Maria di Roccella Church, named Roccelletta, which was founded between the XI and XII century in Romanesque style but with a Byzantine influence. Transfer to 4* hotel in Catanzaro, dinner and overnight.

DAY 5 - Visit of Monasterace Archaeological Park and of Stilo

Breakfast. Sightseeing of Monasterace Archaeological Park, close to Punta Stilo cape. Here they have found the ancient city of Kaulon, another colony of Magna Grecia. In the Museum are hosted several evidences and 2 beautiful mosaics which represent a dragon, whose one is over 25 sq.m., one of the biggest in Europe of that era. In the afternoon a guided walk in Stilowith its The Cattolica, a small 9th-century temple which imitates the classic Byzantine church in its square Greek cross design, with three apses facing the east and five small domes. Here the monks of St. Basil (Basilians), who in Calabria had found refuge from persecution, pursued their ideals of poverty and detachment from worldly concerns. Transfer to 4* hote in Siderno, dinner and overnight.

DAY 6 - Sightseeing of the Archaeological Park of Locri and the medieval Gerace

Breakfast. Guided visit of the Archaeological Park in Locri, one of the widest in Calabria which is few kilometer away from the centre of the town, in an area where once rise up the colony Lokroi Epizephyroi. Linked to this area, there are the National Museum dedicated to the Greek city and the recent one which is hosted inside the Casino Macrì with more evidences from the Roman period. In the afternoon guided walking tour of Gerace, important little town which is considered a “monumental historical centre” with several churches and palaces and the Cathedral, one of the biggest in Calabria. Come back to the hotel, dinner and overnight.

DAY 7 - Departure
